Wolverhampton Schools of Sanctuary not let detailing their commitment on their website:
Goldthorn Park Primary School.
These are just a few of the many schools all over the country who are committing themselves to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space of safety. Read more HERE .
We are grateful to Wolverhampton City Council and to Claire Sumner of the Citizenship, Language and Learning Team for their support. They will be pleased to give advice about how to become a School of Sanctuary. As at February 2024, Claire has a further 12 schools going through the accreditation process.
Here are some news items from our Schools of Sanctuary archive:
We welcome Stowlawn Primary School to our community of Schools of Sanctuary in Wolverhampton. “We are delighted to have been awarded ‘School of Sanctuary’ Status – one of only 10 schools in Wolverhampton . It is a privilege to be recognised for the support we give to all seekers of sanctuary.” (from their twitter feed).
We welcome St. Andrew’s Church of England Primary School to our growing number of Wolverhampton Schools of Sanctuary. Several members of W’ton CofS were delighted to take part in presenting the award and addressing the children, explaining how important it would be for the young children who currently attend our refugees’ drop-in centre to be able to go to schools where they could be sure of a warm welcome. We were particularly impressed to be introduced to some of the children who have been appointed as special interpreters for new arrivals, because they speak two or more languages themselves, and can make sure that nobody is left out.
